This would appear to be the civilian but which soldier has still to be fully identified. Charles WOOLLARD was born in Woodditton on 19th July 1883 (Newmarket Q3-1883 3B:509), son of Jacob and Eliza WOOLLARD (née OAKE). 1891 census...Aged 7, he was "on the Green", Burrough Green with his father Jacob WOOLLARD [33] agent for sewing machine company; his mother Eliza [27] born Burrough Green; sisters Ethel [5], Emma [4] and Alice [4 months] and brother John W. [2]. All except his mother were born in Woodditton. 1901 census...Aged 17, cattle man on farm, he was at Back Lane, Burrough Green with his widower grandfatherJames OAK [70] horseman on farm, born Burrough Green; his uncle Walter OAK, [49] farm labourer, born Burrough Green; his parents (father a bricklayer's labourer); brothers Frederick [20] born in Burrough Green, a cripple from child birth, John, Thomas [8] and Frank [2] both born in Burrough Green; sisters Ethel, Hilda [6] and Ada [2 months] both born in Burrough Green. 1911 census...Aged 27, farm labourer, he was at Town Yard, Burrough Green with his parents, sisters Hannah, Ada and Nellie [7] born Burrough Green; brothers Frank and Arthur [5] born Burrough Green. One of his mother's 13 children had died. His brother Frank, served all the war in the King's Royal Rifle Corps and gave his intended address on discharge as Grove Cottage, Burrough Green. Brother William John was No 4992 in the 5th (Reserve) Bedfordshire Regiment, transferred to Royal Engineers 523068 as John William, a carpenter, but never served abroad. On 12th April 1914 in St Augustine's Burrough Green, he married Nellie Rose COPPEN (Newmarket Q2-1914 3B:1197). Their daughter Audrey M was born on 24th May 1915 and married Frederick Everitt. |

Nothing has so far been found to categorically link this man with this soldier, who appears as the only Charles Woollard dying in the Great War
recorded on CWGC. There is one reference, not documented, to him dying in Italy which would make him this man.
He served in the B.E.F. from 27th September 1916 to 9th October 1916 as 40472, 1st Bn. Bedfordshire Regiment, transferring to 32nd Royal Fusiliers until 12th November 1917 and then to the 26th Battalion in Italy until his death on 23rd February 1919.
